![]() ![]() The first half of Resurrections did a great job of eschewing that, of not relying on those shortcuts. There's so much stuff we've seen over and over again, that we kind accept it as normal, even though it's all kind of pointless and meaningless. They're based on shortcuts and copouts that other movies have taken to get a point across easily, and without that background of other passable movies, those clichés wouldn't really make sense. They're not based on the kinds of real emotions and real choices that actual people would make (even if those people were superheros or being attacked by aliens or ghost or whatever). The big point he makes is that a lot of films today are being written around clichés from other movies. Nerdwriter did a great video a few years ago about "passable movies". But it was not a particularly good movie. Nothing that would have everyone talking while walking out of the theater. There were no real memorable moments in the entire movie the way there were in previous installments. The actors they got for this movie were excellent, but they didn't have much to work with. I feel like so much talent was wasted on screen. The movie needed better fight choreography, which is sad considering that decent fight choreography is considered a hallmark of the series. This led to the action set pieces being devoid of any real meaning, and the fact that the editing was so frantic during them, it was hard to really follow who was "winning" any given fight. How am I supposed to have any emotional investment in a story with no weight? ![]() Just all of this background information - that we are told but not shown - if I can hearken back to the first rule of filmmaking. And despite all of that, there was never at any point a clear understanding of the stakes. There were far too many scenes where it was just two characters talking to one another about events that happened offscreen. I feel like the pieces were there for this to be a truly outstanding movie, but the execution just fell completely apart. Although maybe this movie will be different than the original trilogy, and the second one will include a satisfying conclusion to some of these threads? Overall, I was totally on board and excited for the first half, and then just got more and more disappointed by the end. And then WB actually did come in and dumb it down because they didn't like the original ending, or something like that? Like, they started making a movie making fun of studios and how the 'corporate suits' ruin everything by dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator. Or to put it another way, the second half of the movie felt like the kind of movie the first half was critiquing. ![]() I kept expecting for there to be some moment where everything would get flipped, and instead of turning in to some action movie, it would show how we have to question these assumptions and perspectives that are so common in action movies. My biggest complain about Resurrections is that they set up these themes very well, but then I felt like I never really got a payoff. ![]()
